U.S. high-school students hit historic lows in reading and math scores

A newly released report from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) shows that U.S. 12th-graders’ average math score is now the lowest since the test’s current form began in 2005, and reading scores have fallen to their worst levels since 1992; specifically, 45% of seniors scored below “basic” in math and only 33% are considered ready for college-level math, while the achievement gap between high- and low-performing students has reached its widest ever.
